SUMMARY:Corinna Barrett Lain\, Author of Secrets of the Killing State
DESCRIPTION:Event Button\n \n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Southern Center for Human Rights and the Georgia Resource Center invite you to join us for a lecture and talkback with Corinna Barrett Lain\, author of Secrets of the Killing State: The Untold Story of Lethal Injection. \n\n\n\nCLE Credit Pending \n\n\n\nAbout Corinna Barrett Lain \n\n\n\nCORINNA BARRETT LAIN is the S. D. Roberts & Sandra Moore Professor of Law at the University of Richmond School of Law. She is one of the nation’s leading authorities on the death penalty\, presenting her work at national and international conferences and publishing in the top law journals in the country. She is also one of the leading voices on criminal justice in Virginia more broadly\, lecturing at annual conferences for the bench and bar and serving as the principal co-author of Thompson-West’s Virginia Practice Series on criminal law\, a four-volume treatise that serves as the authoritative guide for Virginia criminal law and procedure. Lain is a former prosecutor\, former sergeant in the Army\, and recipient of the University of Richmond’s Distinguished Educator Award\, the highest award that the University bestows. \n\n\n\nAbout Secrets of the Killing State \n\n\n\nLethal injection is nothing like what people think. This is its untold story. \n\n\n\nIn the popular imagination\, lethal injection is a slight pinch and a swift nodding off to forever-sleep. It is performed by well-qualified medical professionals. It is regulated and carefully conducted. And it usually provides a “humane” death. In reality\, however\, not one of those things is true. \n\n\n\nSecrets of the Killing State pulls back the curtain on this clandestine punishment practice\, presenting a view of lethal injection that states have worked hard to hide. Botched executions are a part of this story\, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. For all the suffering that we see\, there is also suffering that we don’t see. Indeed\, the story told here is even bigger than the executions themselves\, for behind the scenes is where it unfolds. Fake science\, torturous drugs\, inept executioners\, prison problems\, and decades of state secrecy have created an execution method hard-wired to go wrong in countless ways. \n\n\n\nRead More

SUMMARY:Giving Tuesday 2025
DESCRIPTION:This Giving Tuesday you have a special opportunity to double YOUR impact and OURS!\n\n\n\nThanks to a generous $25\,000 matching challenge from Allen and Adria Garrett\, every single donation you make to the Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) now through Giving Tuesday will be matched dollar-for-dollar\, multiplying the power of your support. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, SCHR has been a tireless leader in the fight for justice in the Deep South. With your partnership\, we have done amazing work securing critical victories defending the rights of vulnerable communities and advancing transformative justice\, including: \n\n\n\n\nWe successfully passed legislation in Georgia to make it harder to execute people with intellectual disability.\n\n\n\nWe secured a second contempt order against the Fulton County Sheriff for holding women with serious mental illness in torturous conditions of solitary confinement.\n\n\n\nWe filed a lawsuit challenging a law that jails poor people even when judges presiding over their cases think they should be released.\n\n\n\n\nWith your support\, we know we can do more. \n\n\n\nEvery moment matters in the fight against injustice. Your donation today will go twice as far—every dollar donated through December 2nd will be matched\, doubling your power (and ours) to challenge systemic inequality.
