In response\, the County has remained silent about next steps and has not sought public input on the future of the FCJ. \n\n\n\nWe are opening this listening and reporting process so that those indirectly & directly impacted can offer meaningful recommendations to elected officials. \n\n\n\nThis webinar marks the first session in an ongoing series of People’s Assembly events. It will feature a panel of litigators familiar with the harms suffered by people detained at FCJ. The discussion will set the stage for the following weeks of community reporting\, where persons indirectly & directly impacted can offer meaningful recommendations to elected officials. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvents \n\n\n\nA webinar moderated by SCHR Director of Public Policy Tiffany Roberts on December 16\, 2024\, at 6:00 PM featuring C.K. Hoffler\, counsel for the family of Leonard Fortner who was killed at the Fulton County Jail in April; Atteeyah Hollie\, SCHR Deputy Director & Impact Litigation Director; Devin Franklin\, SCHR Senior Movement Policy Counsel; and Robyn Hasan\, Women on the Rise Georgia Executive Director. \n\n\n\nThere will be 3 People’s Assemblies that will include a brief overview of the DOJ’s reporting and an opportunity for formerly incarcerated individuals and the families of currently incarcerated people to speak to their experiences and concerns. \n\n\n\nA public reporting day will be structured to resemble the April 2023 listening session of the United Nations Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in Law Enforcement\, which SCHR co-hosted.

D. Roberts & Sandra Moore Professor of Law at the University of Richmond School of Law. She is one of the nation’s leading authorities on the death penalty\, presenting her work at national and international conferences and publishing in the top law journals in the country. She is also one of the leading voices on criminal justice in Virginia more broadly\, lecturing at annual conferences for the bench and bar and serving as the principal co-author of Thompson-West’s Virginia Practice Series on criminal law\, a four-volume treatise that serves as the authoritative guide for Virginia criminal law and procedure. In this role\, she directed and supervised enforcement of federal civil rights laws across the country. Under her leadership\, the Division established new enforcement records for prosecutions of hate crimes\, and law enforcement misconduct cases\, and achieved groundbreaking results in areas including redlining\, disability rights\, education\, fair housing\, voting rights and more. Clarke’s tenure brought renewed focus on victims and survivors of violence. She supervised successful prosecutions of defendants tied to the tragic deaths of George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, Tyre Nichols and many others. During the Spring 2025 semester\, Clarke taught the Federal Civil Rights Law Bootcamp and worked with students in mentorship settings. She provided counseling to students interested in careers in public service and government. Before her confirmation as Assistant Attorney General\, Clarke served as the President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law\, one of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations founded at the request of President John F. Kennedy. She also held leadership roles at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the New York State Attorney General’s Office. A lifelong civil rights lawyer\, Clarke began her career as a trial attorney in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Clarke is a frequent public speaker who has helped to shape the national dialogue around issues of civil and constitutional rights\, and race and democracy. She has testified about these issues before the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. She has also written several law review articles\, edited two books and previously co-taught a seminar\, Civil Rights Lawyering in the Modern Era: Theory and Practice\, with Kendall Thomas at Columbia Law School. Clarke is a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia Law School.  About Donald B. Verrilli\, Jr. Donald B. Verrilli\, Jr. is a partner with Munger\, Tolles & Olson\, and the founder of its Washington\, D.C.\, office. Mr. Verrilli is one of the nation’s premier Supreme Court and appellate advocates. He served as Solicitor General of the United States from June 2011 to June 2016. Since joining the firm after his government service\, he has handled numerous significant cases in the United States Supreme Court\, including his successful defense of the constitutionality of the federal law establishing the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico in Financial Oversight and Management Board v. Aurelius. He has also won victories for clients in high-stakes class action\, antitrust\, constitutional\, government contracts and copyright appeals. During his time as Solicitor General\, he argued more than 50 cases before the Supreme Court\, including landmark decisions upholding the Affordable Care Act (National Federation of Independent Businesses v. Sebelius and King v. Burwell) and recognizing marriage equality (Obergefell v. Hodges). Mr. Verrilli also achieved victories in two important patent cases\, Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank and Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics\, in a case vindicating the president’s foreign affairs authority in Zivotofsky v. Kerry\, and in numerous cases involving civil rights\, women’s rights and other matters of national importance involving antitrust\, copyright\, telecommunications\, the environment\, the First Amendment\, the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment\, the separation of powers\, criminal law and other federal constitutional and statutory matters. In addition to handling matters before the U.S. Supreme Court and the courts of appeals\, Mr. Verrilli’s practice focuses on representing and counseling clients on multi-dimensional problems\, where litigation\, regulation and public policy intersect to shape markets and industries in our evolving economy. This event will take place in person in downtown Atlanta at Central Presbyterian Church and will be live-streamed. To stream the event\, join us live on FaceBook\, YouTube\, and justicereformpartnership.org. \n\n\n\nLearn from policy experts and perform advocacy related to criminal legal reform at the Georgia State Capitol. \n\n\n\nThroughout the day\, you will have the chance to connect with like-minded individuals\, engage with lawmakers\, learn about important criminal legal issues\, and discover ways to support people who are incarcerated and impact change. \n\n\n\nBreakfast and lunch will be provided. Breakfast and registration begin at 8:00 am.
