SUMMARY:Defending Democracy - Protecting Protest Rights & Countering the “Terrorist” Label in Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Learn how Georgia is using “terrorism” charges to criminalize protest. Authorities are targeting the essential support systems\, like bail funds and legal aid\, that sustain social movements. To protect our dissent rights\, we must move beyond defense and proactively change the laws that enable this repression.

SUMMARY:Giving Tuesday 2025
DESCRIPTION:This Giving Tuesday you have a special opportunity to double YOUR impact and OURS!\n\n\n\nThanks to a generous $25\,000 matching challenge from Allen and Adria Garrett\, every single donation you make to the Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) now through Giving Tuesday will be matched dollar-for-dollar\, multiplying the power of your support. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, SCHR has been a tireless leader in the fight for justice in the Deep South. With your partnership\, we have done amazing work securing critical victories defending the rights of vulnerable communities and advancing transformative justice\, including: \n\n\n\n\nWe successfully passed legislation in Georgia to make it harder to execute people with intellectual disability.\n\n\n\nWe secured a second contempt order against the Fulton County Sheriff for holding women with serious mental illness in torturous conditions of solitary confinement.\n\n\n\nWe filed a lawsuit challenging a law that jails poor people even when judges presiding over their cases think they should be released.\n\n\n\n\nWith your support\, we know we can do more. \n\n\n\nEvery moment matters in the fight against injustice. Your donation today will go twice as far—every dollar donated through December 2nd will be matched\, doubling your power (and ours) to challenge systemic inequality.

SUMMARY:Corinna Barrett Lain\, Author of Secrets of the Killing State
DESCRIPTION:Event Button\n \n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Southern Center for Human Rights and the Georgia Resource Center invite you to join us for a lecture and talkback with Corinna Barrett Lain\, author of Secrets of the Killing State: The Untold Story of Lethal Injection. \n\n\n\nCLE Credit Pending \n\n\n\nAbout Corinna Barrett Lain \n\n\n\nCORINNA BARRETT LAIN is the S. D. Roberts & Sandra Moore Professor of Law at the University of Richmond School of Law. She is one of the nation’s leading authorities on the death penalty\, presenting her work at national and international conferences and publishing in the top law journals in the country. She is also one of the leading voices on criminal justice in Virginia more broadly\, lecturing at annual conferences for the bench and bar and serving as the principal co-author of Thompson-West’s Virginia Practice Series on criminal law\, a four-volume treatise that serves as the authoritative guide for Virginia criminal law and procedure. Lain is a former prosecutor\, former sergeant in the Army\, and recipient of the University of Richmond’s Distinguished Educator Award\, the highest award that the University bestows. \n\n\n\nAbout Secrets of the Killing State \n\n\n\nLethal injection is nothing like what people think. This is its untold story. \n\n\n\nIn the popular imagination\, lethal injection is a slight pinch and a swift nodding off to forever-sleep. It is performed by well-qualified medical professionals. It is regulated and carefully conducted. And it usually provides a “humane” death. In reality\, however\, not one of those things is true. \n\n\n\nSecrets of the Killing State pulls back the curtain on this clandestine punishment practice\, presenting a view of lethal injection that states have worked hard to hide. Botched executions are a part of this story\, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. For all the suffering that we see\, there is also suffering that we don’t see. Indeed\, the story told here is even bigger than the executions themselves\, for behind the scenes is where it unfolds. Fake science\, torturous drugs\, inept executioners\, prison problems\, and decades of state secrecy have created an execution method hard-wired to go wrong in countless ways. \n\n\n\nRead More

SUMMARY:The People's Process
DESCRIPTION:Register for The People's Process \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn November 14\, 2024\, the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division released its findings\, uncovering widespread human rights abuses at the Fulton County Jail. In response\, the County has remained silent about next steps and has not sought public input on the future of the FCJ. \n\n\n\nWe are opening this listening and reporting process so that those indirectly & directly impacted can offer meaningful recommendations to elected officials. \n\n\n\nThis webinar marks the first session in an ongoing series of People’s Assembly events. It will feature a panel of litigators familiar with the harms suffered by people detained at FCJ. The discussion will set the stage for the following weeks of community reporting\, where persons indirectly & directly impacted can offer meaningful recommendations to elected officials. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvents \n\n\n\nA webinar moderated by SCHR Director of Public Policy Tiffany Roberts on December 16\, 2024\, at 6:00 PM featuring C.K. Hoffler\, counsel for the family of Leonard Fortner who was killed at the Fulton County Jail in April; Atteeyah Hollie\, SCHR Deputy Director & Impact Litigation Director; Devin Franklin\, SCHR Senior Movement Policy Counsel; and Robyn Hasan\, Women on the Rise Georgia Executive Director. \n\n\n\nThere will be 3 People’s Assemblies that will include a brief overview of the DOJ’s reporting and an opportunity for formerly incarcerated individuals and the families of currently incarcerated people to speak to their experiences and concerns. \n\n\n\nA public reporting day will be structured to resemble the April 2023 listening session of the United Nations Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in Law Enforcement\, which SCHR co-hosted.

SUMMARY:REP-A-THON
DESCRIPTION:Legal representation is important. This is especially true in Atlanta today as dozens of individuals are being prosecuted as a result of exercising their First Amendment Right to protest and dissent. \n\n\n\nOn May 4th\, 2024\, join the Southern Center for Human Rights\, Color of Change\, and the Center for Constitutional Rights for “Rep-A-Thon”\, a live-streamed legal defense fundraiser. \n\n\n\nHarkening back to old-school telethons that generated attention toward worthy causes\, this new-age Rep-a-Thon is centered on raising awareness of the attack on the right to protest and dissent in Metro Atlanta and to raise funds to support SCHR’s First Amendment Lawyer Bridge\, a joint effort with Community Justice Exchange to coordinate legal representation for individuals facing prosecution for exercising their right to protest and dissent\, as well as providing support and training to the attorneys representing them. \n\n\n\nAs prosecutions against protesters grow in complexity and frequency\, First Amendment protections are slowly being eroded. The Bridge is an innovative\, first-of-its-kind permanent response to efforts to quell dissent—a permanent mass defense infrastructure\, harnessing the collective expertise\, creativity and power of movement and zealous advocacy. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of history\, education\, music\, and wellness\, and learn how you can help support the fight against State repression. \n\n\n\nRegister today to make a pledge and receive reminders\, updates\, and other information about Rep-a-Thon.

SUMMARY:2024 New York City Benefit Reception
DESCRIPTION:YOU’RE INVITED for an evening of community and justice to raise needed support for the inspiring work of the Southern Center for Human Rights and to celebrate the upcoming release of Demand the Impossible: One Lawyer’s Pursuit of Equal Justice for All (W.W. Norton forthcoming Mar. 2024)\, authored by Robert Tsai\, which chronicles the life and times of Stephen B. Bright. \n\n\n\nHOST COMMITTEE(in formation) \n\n\n\nDr. Janet Dewart BellCatherine ChadwickPat IrvinJoyce S. JohnsonJames Kwak and Sylvia BrandtDr. Kitty Muldoon Steel and Lewis Steel \n\n\n\nAddress Upon Confirmation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Guests \n\n\n\nRobert L. Tsai is a professor of law at Boston University School of Law\, where he teaches courses in constitutional law\, presidential leadership\, and individual rights. He is keenly interested in political culture\, legal change\, democratic design\, inequality\, and popular sovereignty. Professor Tsai is the author of three books: Practical Equality: Forging Justice in a Divided Nation (W.W. Norton 2019); America’s Forgotten Constitutions: Defiant Visions of Power and Community (Harvard 2014); and Eloquence and Reason: Creating a First Amendment Culture (Yale 2008). \n\n\n\nProfessor Tsai is finishing his fourth book\, Demand the Impossible: One Lawyer’s Pursuit of Equal Justice for All (W.W. Norton forthcoming Mar. 2024)\, that explores the life and times of Stephen Bright\, who for nearly 40 years led the Southern Center for Human Rights. SCHR’s experiences handling capital cases and prison condition suits teach us about the strategies and ideas that worked during the early decades of mass incarceration in America. \n\n\n\nStephen B. Bright has tried capital cases before juries in Alabama\, Georgia\, and Mississippi; argued four capital cases before the United States Supreme Court; and argued many other cases before state and federal appellate courts. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of his client in each case. Three involved racial discrimination in jury selection\, and the fourth involved the right to a mental health expert for a poor person facing the death penalty. He served as the director of the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta from 1982 to 2005 and as its president and senior counsel from 2006 to 2016. \n\n\n\nWith Remarks From \n\n\n\nTerrica Redfield Ganzy is Executive Director of the Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR)\, where she leads the SCHR team in carrying out its mission to dramatically transform the criminal legal system through direct representation\, impact litigation\, policy advocacy\, and public education. \n\n\n\nPrior to becoming SCHR’s Executive Director\, Terrica served in several different roles at SCHR\, most recently as Deputy Director\, helping to coordinate SCHR’s strategy and programs. Terrica also served as SCHR’s development director\, designing and leading SCHR’s development strategy and building strategic partnerships. For nine years\, Terrica served as a Staff Attorney in SCHR’s Capital Litigation Unit\, where her work focused on representing clients on death row in Georgia and Alabama. For five years\, she also served as the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) Death Penalty Resource Counsel\, providing training and resources to capital defense attorneys throughout the nation.

SUMMARY:Pain & Power Part II: Tackling Police Violence in Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Southern Center for Human Rights on Thursday February 22\, 2024 at 6:00 PM at the Auburn Avenue Research Library for Pain & Power Part II: Tackling Police Violence in Atlanta. \n\n\n\nIn August 2023\, we welcomed Samuel Sinyangwe\, a renowned data scientist and co-founder of Campaign Zero\, Mapping Police Violence\, and The Police Scorecard\, as our keynote speaker at Pain & Power Part I. His notable contributions to countering police violence reflect our larger commitment to data-driven solutions. Because we believe the people closest to problems are also closest to the solutions\, Atlanta residents participated in our Community Safety & Police Violence project over the last year and offered solutions directly to elected officials as community experts. Because of Samuel’s research\, we now know that 2023 was one of the deadliest years on record for police violence. \n\n\n\nPain & Power Part II will feature the mini-documentary we commissioned about the project\, followed by a lawmaker panel and community talk-back about what change is possible right now. This is our effort to provide a brave space for lawmakers and community members to discuss the implementation of practical policy solutions. \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin the evening with a light reception at 6:00 PM and programming will immediately follow at 6:30 PM.
